Ambulai Johnson, MSc, MPH is technical consultant with the World Health Organization Special Programme for Tropical Diseases Research in collaboration with Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Founder of Center for Advancing Health Systems Innovations.

What do you do?

In my role as a consultant, I work with academic institutions in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) to facilitate research and address barriers for health systems strengthening. CAdHSI delivers sustainable solutions by implementing innovative programs, building local capacity, generating evidence-based research, and facilitating knowledge translation. These efforts aim to improve population health by reinforcing climate resilience and health systems to meet the needs of the most vulnerable populations in Liberia.

What are some of the challenges you are facing in your work?

The use of implementation research to strengthen health systems is very new to many LMICs. Every country has different constraints, so adapting frameworks has been very challenging. However, it is increasingly recognized as important for facilitating effective health care delivery.

Why did you apply to GHDI? What do you hope to get out of it?

I have always been interested in preparing health systems and improving implementation efforts in LMICs. I wanted to learn how to maximize impact in resource-constrained environments to improve health outcomes. I see value in collaborating with leading institutions that have the power to improve lives.

GHDI was a unique opportunity to learn real skills. It gave me a good understanding of not just implementing a project but ensuring it is effective and sustainable. GHDI has given me the leadership and management skills to think and lead differently - to use strategies to engage and influence key stakeholders, help my team reach optimal outcomes, and address complex challenges. These skills are life-changing.

What is your advice to someone who is thinking about applying to GHDI?

If you are interested in learning practical skills to strengthen health systems, I think this program is the best! My advice is that when you get admitted, you have to listen well, take notes, and ask the right questions. You will also learn a lot from your fellow students.

What would you say to someone just starting out in healthcare in your country?

I always tell people that if you come into healthcare to make money, it is not the place for you. If you are passionate and have the empathy to address population health issues, getting into healthcare is the right direction. These are essential ingredients to have a direct impact on people. Lastly, be innovative and use your skills to be a better ancestor.

What continues to fuel your inspiration and drive in your work?

My country was devastated by a 14-year civil war and the Ebola epidemic. I have witnessed the harm caused by unequal access to care. I am passionate about how I can identify challenges and find solutions to improve access to interventions that will lead to better health outcomes.
