Dr. Anuradha Pichumani is an OB-GYN consultant, infertility specialist, and Executive Director of Sree Renga Hospital, Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, India.

Where are you today in your career and what led you to the work that you're doing now?

I’m an OB-GYN consultant and have been in clinical practice for the last 32 years. My husband and I founded Sree Renga Hospital, designing and building it to fit the needs of the rural- and semi-urban community we serve in India.

Currently, I am collaborating with national and international organizations in various leadership roles, including at Ariadne Labs; Asian Society for Quality in Health Care; International Society for Quality in Health Care; International Organization for Standardization; National Accreditation Board For Hospitals and Healthcare Providers; Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organization; and WHO’s Patient Safety Taskforce.

What’s the biggest challenge that you have faced in your career so far?

India is a low resource country with a huge and diverse population so we do face unique challenges. Implementing patient safety and quality has been a huge challenge. Over the past 10 years, I have trained our workforce to implement person-centered care in our hospital to achieve and maintain national-level accreditation, the first hospital in the State of Tamil Nadu to receive it.

What would you say are you most proud of in your career so far?

My proudest moment so far is completing GHDI!

What impact do you think GHDI will have on your career?

GHDI has helped me to have a global outlook and empowered me with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to overcome the challenges I face in my own setting. GHDI has motivated me to be a good ancestor for future generations.

What do you think someone should know before applying to GHDI?

You need to be very dedicated and passionate in whatever you do. GHDI is a great learning opportunity and empowers you with the knowledge to understand healthcare delivery on a global level. The guidance of the GHDI faculty instilled a sense of responsibility in all of us to make meaningful contributions to the field of healthcare.

What continues to fuel your inspiration and drive in your work?

I am a self-motivated person. I try to find new ways to learn new things and be a better person than I was the previous day. I am also always thankful for the emotional support given by my husband and family. We take inspiration from each other to work with passion and commitment.
