Dr. Robert Riviello’s clinical and research interests are in global health, specifically the reduction of disparities and the expansion of surgical delivery for low-income populations by developing surgical workforce and surgical infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Riviello devotes 3-6 months of clinical time annually and his entire research focus to global health initiatives, primarily in Rwanda, addressing the critical issues of surgical access, quality and outcomes in research poor-settings with a focus on improving systems of care and developing infrastructure for the sustainable delivery of surgical care. He leads the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) surgery efforts in Rwanda and is the BWH PI for theRwanda Human Resources for Health (HRH) program in conjunction with Harvard Medical School. Dr. Riviello attended the University of California at San Diego. He then completed his General Surgery Residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and a Fulbright International Fellowship in Global Surgery at Centro Evangelico de Medicina do Lubango, in Angola. Prior to joining the faculty, Dr. Riviello completed Fellowships in Acute Care and Burn Surgery and Critical Care Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
