Harvard Business School, Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness

Harvard Business School Logo Based at the Harvard Business School, the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness is dedicated to the study of competition and its implications for company strategy; the competitiveness of nations, regions, and cities; and the relationship between competition and society. The Institute seeks to develop new theory, assemble bodies of data to test and apply the theory, and disseminate its ideas widely to scholars and practitioners in business, government, and non-governmental organizations such as universities, economic development organizations, and foundations.

The Institute is led by Michael E. Porter, Bishop William Lawrence University Professor. The Institute is dedicated to deepening, extending, and disseminating the body of research that Professor Porter has pioneered over the last two decades.

Harvard Medical School, Department of Global Health and Social Medicine

Harvard Medical SchoolThe mission of Harvard Medical School is to create and nurture a diverse community committed to leadership in alleviating human suffering caused by disease. Students and more than 7,500 full-time faculty in 11 academic departments located on the School’s Boston campus, in one of 47 hospital-based clinical departments at 18 Harvard-affiliated teaching hospitals and research institutes, or at 30 research centers, divisions, and institutes, advance the School’s mission every day.

Within HMS, the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine (DGHSM) works in close collaboration with the GHD project teams, from participating in GHDonline communities to developing the GHD academic platform.

DGHSM is an interdisciplinary basic science department focused on both teaching and conducting research about the social, cultural and moral aspects of illness and health care, with a special emphasis on reducing health disparities and improving the quality of medical care. Central to the mission of the Department is an effort to address significant global health problems affecting resource-poor societies and underserved American communities. Members of the Department develop innovative interventions for dealing with multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, mental illnesses, and drug abuse in resource poor settings.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Division of Global Health Equity

Brigham and Women's Hospital LogoBrigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) is a 747-bed nonprofit teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School and a founding member of Partners HealthCare System, an integrated health care delivery network. BWH is committed to excellence in patient care with expertise in virtually every specialty of medicine and surgery. Through investigation and discovery conducted at its Biomedical Research Institute (BRI), BWH is an international leader in basic, clinical and translational research on human diseases, involving more than 800 physician-investigators and renowned biomedical scientists and faculty.

The Division of Global Health Equity (DGHE) is dedicated to addressing health disparities through training, education, research and service. The Division focuses on infectious diseases (e.g., HIV and tuberculosis) as well as non-infectious diseases (e.g., coronary artery disease and diabetes) and other health problems of major importance across the globe. Through the hospital’s Doris and Howard Hiatt Residency in Global Health Equity, internal medicine residents in training divide their time between BWH and Partners In Health project sites. This model is now being replicated at other medical schools and teaching hospitals across the country.
